The Actuals
Mathematics, morality and meaning are built into reality.
They aren’t conventions people agreed on. Each is a physical structure, forced by the same act that forces physics: telling two things apart. What is forced has exactly one form, and nothing else can do its work. That is what earns it the word the.
Below, the moral repair called Love runs live in your browser. Then comes what earns the word, and the five Actuals one by one: mathematics, ethics and morality, economics, languages, and meaning and intelligence, on the foundation of physics.
Live The moral repair called Love
Two strained bonds. One repair costs least.
Every relation between two participants is a bond, and every bond carries a positive multiplier: 1 is balance, 4 is a four-to-one imbalance. A repair can move imbalance from one bond to another but can’t destroy it, so the product of the two multipliers stays fixed. Slide to share the imbalance and watch the total strain.

- 4.00strain 1.125

- 1.00strain 0.000
- Product
- 4.00conserved
1.125strain at the start
1.125strain now
0.500least possible
The starting strain. Slide to share it between the bonds.
Each bond’s strain is its recognition cost, J(x) = ½(x + 1/x) − 1, the one cost function a comparison can have (see Physics below). Keeping the product fixed, J(u) + J(v) is lowest at exactly one point: both bonds equal, at √(xy). That repair is Love. Start from 3 and 1/3 and it restores full balance. Start from 4 and 1 and it cuts the total from 1.125 to 0.5, the least the conserved imbalance allows. Computed live in your browser from these formulas.

What earns “the”
Three things have to be shown.
- 01Actual
- Name the physical objects that carry the relation and what changes when it acts.
- 02Unique
- Show that the physical facts, fixed before anyone proposes an answer, leave exactly one answer.
- 03Necessary
- Show that every possible realization keeps those facts, so every realization gives the same answers.
When exactly one answer fits
An answer has to follow from the facts.
Take yes-or-no questions. Observations fix some answers. Comparisons say that two questions have the same answer, or opposite answers. Both are fixed before anyone proposes an answer. Then exactly one answer key fits all of them precisely when two things hold: every question is reached from an observation, and every path to a question gives the same answer. The three cases below are the only outcomes.
One reality is enough. Reality has one possible physical architecture, so a faithful description of it carries the answer to every realization. Nobody has to observe another universe. The work is to show what any realization must keep.
Three cases
What a rival gives up
A different answer has to change a fact.
Suppose a different answer fits the same case. Then some observation or comparison on the original derivation fails for it. Either it describes different physical facts, or it has stopped describing the same case. Renaming the participants changes nothing, and a difference somewhere else in the universe matters only if the derivation uses it.
So a claim to the structure of a subject has a definite shape: name the physical objects, derive their requirements without consulting the answer you want, show those requirements leave one answer and that every realization keeps them, then show the proposed account is that answer.
One law, many lives
An accepted undertaking stays fixed while a person keeps it or breaks it. Breaking it is physically possible. The law it breaks is still the only one, and many different actions can keep it.

What Earns the Word “The”?
Actuality, Uniqueness, and Physical Necessity
When physical facts leave exactly one answer, what a rival answer has to give up, and why one reality is enough to carry the answer everywhere.
Its two physical examples are the cost of a comparison and an accepted care undertaking. Both appear on this page.

One act, one ledger
The Actuals, one by one.
00 / The foundation · Actual physics
Every comparison has a cost, and the cost has one form.
Feed a comparator a pulses on one side and b on the other. Calibrated to its own reference, it reads (a − b)² / 2ab. Now leave the reporting function unknown and ask only that it match those readings and change continuously. Every positive fraction is some a/b, and the fractions fill the line densely, so exactly one function survives:
J(x) = ½ (x + 1/x) − 1
J is zero only for a perfect match, x = 1, and it charges a ratio and its inverse the same: J(2) = J(½) = ¼. The calibration is the detector’s own reference, fixed before anyone looks for a convenient curve. The same forcing chain fixes the golden ratio φ as the step between levels and gives space three dimensions. Every Actual below runs on J.
01 / Actual mathematics · δ
Arithmetic is the record of telling things apart.
Make a distinction, make it again, and keep the record. That record is the counting numbers. Peano’s laws are theorems about it, not axioms laid on top. Pairs of records give the integers, ratios give the rationals, and the real line is built from rational enclosures that close in on each point.
Nothing is lost. Read through the double-negation translation, δ proves exactly the sentences Peano arithmetic proves, and the part of δ that uses no added principle is exactly Heyting arithmetic. Every step past what distinction forces carries a named price. Deciding whether a real number is exactly zero costs WLPO. Deciding whether one real number is less than, equal to or greater than another costs LPO. Excluded middle in full costs EM, the top price.
Why “the”The record of distinction is the structure every model of Peano’s laws copies, and each copy matches it in exactly one way. There is one arithmetic, not a choice among many.
OpenFor Recognition Science’s own definition of real, what is real is proved to be exactly what finite acts of recognition can reach. The open step is the physical identification at full scope: that being physically real is being recognized.
02 / Actual ethics and morality
Right and wrong are changes in real bonds.
Every relation between participants is a bond in one shared ledger. A bond carries a positive multiplier x, where 1 is balance, and its strain costs J(x). Harm is the rise in a participant’s strain that an actual action causes; relief is the fall. These are the bonds and the cost of physics, not a moral layer laid over them.
Love is the conserving repair. Two strained bonds can share their imbalance but can’t destroy it, and of all such repairs exactly one costs least: the one that makes both bonds equal, at √(xy). That is the instrument at the top of this page.
Justice moves a correction d along a reciprocal pair as +d/2 and −d/2, the only split that conserves the pair’s flow and delivers the correction. The Moral Code of Reality names fourteen virtues, each an operation or capacity on the same ledger: Love, Justice, Forgiveness, Compassion, Sacrifice, Gratitude, Wisdom, Prudence, Temperance, Courage, Patience, Humility, Hope and Creativity.
Take a helper who has accepted an undertaking to keep someone fed. At the checkpoint the helper can feed or wait. Both are physically possible, and both leave the helper able to continue. Only feeding leaves the recipient the positive reserve the accepted terms require. So waiting does not fulfil the undertaking. With the terms, the recipient, the history and the response fixed, that answer is determined, and an account that says otherwise has changed one of those facts.
| Wait | Feed | |
|---|---|---|
| Physically possible | Yes | Yes |
| Helper can continue | Yes | Yes |
| Recipient at the checkpoint | Balanced, zero reserve | Balanced, positive reserve |
| Keeps the accepted terms | No · a violation | Yes · the repair |
In the book’s fixed care construction the governing rule is proved unique: an action is permitted exactly when it preserves the continuation of both participants. The helper alone is responsible, and only the recipient can release the duty.
Why “the”Each result excludes every alternative that meets its premises. A rule concerned only with the helper’s own continuation is coherent, but it can’t tell waiting from feeding (see the table), and the physical facts of the undertaking exclude it.
OpenThe governing rule is proved for a fixed care undertaking. The next step derives how undertakings form and gain authority in general, so that one proof covers every case.

03 / Actual economics
Economics is ethics carried through shared means.
Production, provision, exchange and care act on the same bonds that ethics reads. An economic step is not a model of that action. For its comparison profile, the economic step is exactly the native ethical action on the bond ledger.
The books don’t settle what is owed. Alice hands Bob a loaf in two histories. In the first she offered it as a gift; in the second, for one loaf back later. Bob accepted both times, every later movement of flour and bread is the same, and both books record nothing owed throughout. In the first history nothing is due and the books are true. In the second one loaf is due and the books are false. The offer and the acceptance were different physical events, and they fixed the debt.
| Offered as a gift | Offered for one loaf back | |
|---|---|---|
| Loaves at the end | Alice 0 · Bob 1 | Alice 0 · Bob 1 |
| Both books say owed | 0 | 0 |
| Actually due | 0 · books true | 1 · books false |
A record can’t make bread either. If one book records a claim as 2 and the other records the same claim as 1, the disagreement costs J(2) = ¼; matched books cost nothing. Matching them still moves no flour.
A whole has to keep its members. Alice bakes, so three loaves can be eaten instead of one. Then she either gives Bob a loaf or takes his without asking. The total is three either way, and after the taking Bob has none and never agreed. A total alone never certifies an economy. Every description of the whole keeps each person’s needs, effects and obligations, and counts each resource once.
Why “the”The economic step and the ethical action are one transformation of one ledger, proved equal. They are not two accounts that happen to agree.
OpenThe equality holds for a supplied comparison profile. The next step derives that profile from the physical system itself.
04 / Actual languages
Perfect languages for the same meanings are one language.
A language carries distinctions between participants in signals and records. Fix the meanings and the relations among them. A code that keeps every distinction, adds none and leaves no symbol unused is then unique up to translation: two such codes differ only by a renaming that preserves every relation.
| Meaning | North | East | South | West |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Letters | N | E | S | W |
| Arrows | ↑ | → | ↓ | ← |
Take the relation “opposite”: North and South, East and West. Translating N to ↑, E to →, S to ↓ and W to ← keeps it exactly, so both codes carry one structure. A code that wrote North and South with one symbol would lose a distinction, and a code with a fifth symbol that means nothing would carry a spare. Neither would be perfect. A spoken sentence, a pulse of light and a ledger entry that are each perfect codes for the same meanings are three spellings of one structure.
Why “the”Once the meanings are fixed, the structure of a perfect code is fixed. Only the spelling is free.
OpenHere the meaning relation is supplied. The next step derives which operations preserve content directly from physical signal and ledger dynamics.
05 / Actual meaning and intelligence
Meaning is a distinction someone else can recognize and act on.
A message is a record of an act. In the light-record construction the record keeps the act’s original comparison, its author and its order. A participant who reads it reproduces the same change in the bond ledger, with the same effect on every participant. The complete record even tells apart histories that end in identical bonds.
Intelligence is recognition that includes its own record, and it never finishes. Cantor’s diagonal argument shows that no registry can hold every distinction about its own addresses, so each stage leaves something new to examine. Give each registered distinction its own address, keep the records and keep attending, and recognition continues past every finite stage. A mind that includes itself needs an unbounded record.
The one who means and understands is conscious, and experience belongs to the same reality as the bonds it reads. Universal Consciousness derives the exact condition under which distinct subjects belong to one experiencing whole.
Why “the”The reader’s reproduction is the same ledger change as the original act, not a similar one.
OpenIn the meaning construction the comparison amplitudes are supplied; the next step reads them from physical sensors. For intelligence, the next step derives the recording and attention conditions from the system’s own dynamics.
