Cosmology Lattice Ball Edges Carried Edge Card
A machine-checked proof counts the edges a growing lattice carries for free, and the answer is a simple polynomial.
The carried edge count
In the Recognition Science framework, a ledger is a discrete record of events, and here the events are the adjacencies between cells in a growing lattice ball. The declaration carried_edge_card is a theorem, proved in the machine-checked library of formal theorems, that gives the exact number of these adjacencies which the framework's engine does not have to pay for. In two dimensions, for a diamond-shaped ball of radius t, the number of carried edges is 8t² - 8t + 4. In three dimensions, for an octahedral ball, it is 8t³ - 8t² + 12t - 4. These are closed-form polynomial counts, valid for any positive radius t.
The proof is a clean volume-minus-boundary argument. The total number of adjacencies in the 2D diamond is 8t², and in the 3D octahedron it is 8t³ + 4t. Each adjacency is either a carried edge, where both cells share the same polarization, or an interface edge, where they differ. The interface count is already known: 8t - 4 in 2D and 8t² - 8t + 4 in 3D. Subtracting the interface from the total gives the carried count. The theorem establishes that the carried fraction of all adjacencies approaches 1 as the ball grows, meaning the engine pays only for a vanishingly small boundary layer.
This result is a precise statement of a coarsening principle: carry the bulk coarse, pay only for the interface. The count is a theorem over the natural numbers, with no additional axioms. It does not claim that the physical universe is a lattice, nor that this counting rule is the actual law of physics. It is a mathematical fact about a specific combinatorial model, proved in full.

What this page does not claim
This theorem does not claim that physical space is a lattice or that this counting rule is a law of physics. The carried edge count does not by itself determine the dynamics of the framework's engine. The result does not apply to lattices with boundary conditions other than the specific ball shapes defined here.

This page is generated by a question-recursion engine: the questions its answers raise become the next pages. The current agenda, with open targets marked red:
- How does the carried edge count relate to the total cost the framework assigns to a growing lattice?
- What physical interpretation, if any, does the framework give to the polarization that distinguishes carried from interface edges?
- Does the 3D octahedral count extend to other lattice shapes, such as cubes or hexagonal tilings?
